Blog Response #4
With the introduction of the new novel, share in your blog what attracted you to this novel. What is the primary focus in your novel, and how are the main character or characters handling this situation? After reading the first few chapters, what are your initial thoughts about the book? Slow start? Jumps right in? Share your first impressions.
I was attracted to this novel because war intrigues me. I thought it would be very interesting to see a real account of someone who went through this. So far the primary focus is just to explain the events that this boy went through in detail. Right now the boy is confused and doesnt know much about the events going on in his town and near by cities. I have read the first two chapters so far and it is a pretty slow start. However, there is a few parts that have grasped my attention. It is already a very graphic book and it's sad that a boy so young has to experience this.
ReplyDeleteMy book also involves war, in A long Way Gone there are a lot of crazy scenes and I only got to the 4th chapter. People bleeding to death after getting shot and a mom used her baby after the baby died to protect her from getting shot at.
Deletei was also interested in my book night because of war i really like learning about the holocaust
DeleteI am also reading this book. It was hard for me to get into as well but once you figure out what's going on, it gets good. Its crazy how he has to go through all of this all while being 12 years old.
DeleteMy book, I am Malala, is similar to your book because she also explains events in detail. Most of her accident was told to her by her friends, so I feel like she was as confused as your character was towards the beginning.
DeleteI am also reading a long way gone and the book intrigues me because of the fact that they are 12-13 years old and witnessing first hand the war going on in their country. Seeing loved ones and people from their village running from war.
DeleteI agree Jake, them being so young has to be tuff and being in the situation that there in there probably scared
DeleteI also agree with Jake and Colton. Being so you young is crazy to be witnessing war first hand, and all the blood surrounding them. The woman that used her dead baby to protect herself shows how desperate people were to stay alive.
DeleteThe reason I had my book as one of my choices was because it involved war. Wars interest me a lot so hopefully I like this book. My primary focus in this book is war in Africa. It is told by Ishmael who went through the war. In the first few chapters they introduce us to all the characters and the place the war is taking place. Ishmeal has flashbacks from the wars and when they are going on he sees a lot of bad stuff. People getting shot at and bleeding to death. The book gets to the point really fast; it's not boring at all and there is a lot going on but after a while I will understand all the city's involved in the war.
ReplyDeleteUnlike yours, mine is an extremely slow start which makes for a boring read. Hopefully it will pick up soon.
DeleteMy book sounds different from yours as it does not jump into action right away but has a slow start.
DeleteMy book sounds the same and is really good and interesting to read and its is very fast.
Deletethat part of the book is where it Surprised me i wasnt expecting the first part to be a run and gun idea
DeleteI also have a book about war. I am very interested to see what this boy does to survive in these circumstances. It fascinates me how this young kid goes through all of this and survives to tell the story.
DeleteMy book also has a super slow start and it picks up a couple of chapters later.
DeleteSomething that attracted me to this book is that it reminded me of the book "The Boy in Striped Pajamas." It reminded me of that book because the primary focus of this novel is that these two young boys with two different lives are friends. I am unsure of how the main character Amir is handling this situation because I am not that far into the book yet. My first few thoughts of the book are that it has very slow start and a little confusing right now.
ReplyDeleteYour book sounds like the opposite of mine, in A long Way Gone it starts really fast and get straight to war. I am also unsure of how all the characters meet or get along. They are in a music group so that's why they are friends. I'm curious to see if they stay friends through war.
DeleteIt is interesting when to kids are friends when they are not supposed to be. To young to understand social classes and race in some cases it brings a very interesting story.
DeleteMy book is different, its very fast paced and its really interesting to read, if though it has no backstory to the main character and his friends.
DeleteYour book sounds very interesting, I wish to of had that choice as the World War interest me alot.
DeleteMy book is similar as it has two girls that are friends with different lives as well.
Deletemy book is the complete opposite, as it gets straight to the point of going into war.
DeleteThis book didn't really interest me. It was my 3rd choice, but the title seemed cool. This novel starts out very boring and I'm still confused as to what is going on. I picked up on a few things but still confused how it fits, and how it will unravel.
ReplyDeleteI agree, this book was not my first choice and yes it is very boring right now and I am also confused.
DeleteYou're probably just as confused as the people in my book.
DeleteI agreed as well but, just be paitent with the book once you get to the part where it relates to the title it will get more intresting.
DeleteI'm attracted to this novel because its a war theme based and i found those novels very interesting. espeally the part when the boy explains about the details of what Hes going though right but he cant figure out what events that are going around and the tile is where it got my attention because by looking at it i already can tell its a sad book
ReplyDeleteMy book also has war in it and the group of boys don't really know what's happening because it comes at them so fast.
DeleteI am also very interested in my book as it informs me more about what war was really like and the stuff that was hidden from us and the rest of the world.
DeleteMy book is also about war. Ishmael is a young kid trying to survive in the middle of war. He explains many events that are stomach turning and i feel like that is why i cannot stop reading.
DeleteI also have a book about a war. This young boy gets tied up in the middle of a war. He tries to escape and when he does, he sees very disturbing things. These parts are hard to read but it also makes you want to read more.

ReplyDeleteah gotcha
DeleteThe reason I was attracted to this book is because i wanted to hear about Ishmaels life as a young kid living through war in Africa. To hear what I imagine as 10-15 year old kids have to be on the front lines of war with ak47s strapped to their back interested me. The primary focus of the book is obviously Ishmael and his friends escape from Africa while being plagued with war and so far its pretty interesting. This book is most definitely not a slow start to a book and by page 10 the kids are already running from rebel army's attacking their villages. Although a little confusing at times with all the names of his friends and towns im interested to see where this story goes and all the hardships yet to come.
ReplyDeleteJust like yours, mine is confusing. Everything is slow and is boring. Hopefully it will get better
DeleteI was also interested in my book Night because I wanted to read from the perspective of a young boy who went through the Holocaust. My book was a little confusing in the beginning because it talked about the Jewish religion and I was not sure what he was talking about at all.
Deletei am reading the novel night and i also wanted to read from a young boy's perspective how much they don't realize is going on around them but even though we Arnt much older we know what is really happening.
Deletei am reading this as well and confused on what is going on kinda not a huge fan of this book.
DeleteI am reading along way gone as well and it is very confusing and im lost every now and then i am getting the genral concept but it jumps to different parts very hard to follow
DeleteThe primary focus of my novel is that the main character, ishmael is in Sierra Leone when the civil war is happening. at first he thought it wasn't there and all of a sudden the war hits his village. He tries to get away from it, but the war seems to follow him wherever he goes. The rebels are killing innocent civilians and recruiting any boys and branding them for the rest of their lives. I think the book is pretty sad because people all around him are dying and they really can't do anything to help but just run away. I thought the book had a fast pace the first few chapters because the rebels attack his town in the first 3 chapters.
ReplyDeletei got to that part to and i felt very sorry for the boy because he should have not of went though that at a young age
DeleteIM reading the same book as you and you are right, the war is upon them right away. Its sad he never gets to see his family again but at least he has friends.
DeleteTo be quite honest the book The Kite Runner was my third pick, so I was kind of bummed a little. What caught my attention in this book though was that it was based on 2 characters that are friends even though their lifestyles are total opposites. One goes to school, knows how to read, and is good at literature and the other is a stay-at-home servant that does not go to school or know how to read. The start of the book gives a lot of in-depth detail which is a little boring and a slow start in my opinion. There is not much action in his life for now.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading I am Malala and this book also had a slow start. I find that our characters are similar because Malala finds her education very important and her mom stays at home and doesn't know how to read and write. In the beginning of my book it was after the accident and was talking about how her mom was starting to leaarn how to read and before she knew how to she would get told stories by her husband. I wonder if there will be someone in your book that will inspire your character to learn how to read.
DeleteI have read the Kite Runner in the past, and while the book may seem slow now, you will have to re-read chapters just to take it all in when you get further into the plot. It really is a timeless and moving book and I hope you can get more into it. Maybe I just find it easier to get through the slow bits and prologues, but I've found that my book, "A Thousand Splendid Suns," moves rather quickly. Chapter to chapter, there's never a dull moment (though it is depressing at times). So far, my book is actually genius, and I hope yours starts to excite you, too!
DeleteI am reading Night; in my book has a medium pace start. I would not say it has been slow for the 15 pages I have read but I would not say it has been fast. You said that your book has two friends from different lifestyles, my main character/s consist of a male (Elie Wiesel), his family, close friends, and others inside of the Jewish religion.
DeleteThank you for the advice Karlie, i will stick with it and not give up on it yet.
DeleteThe reason I had choosing my book is because it involved war. The war interest me into read this book and I hope I will like this book to the end. My primary focus is explain what I've read. Its told by Ishmael Beah who went back to the time when he was young. The first few chapters talk about what is going in other villages and how his is next. Later, it happens, the rebels show up and shoot who ever runs away. As he watch people running away blood on them and people getting shot. This book is really descriptive and I can wait to read the rest of the book.
ReplyDeleteMy book also deals with war and not just people getting shot, it infants being used as target practice. It's a very emotional book just from the start of reading. Mine is also really descriptive in the way of showing how they are giving up on prayer and their religious beliefs and how they are just barely holding on to the world.
DeleteI agree A long way gone is a very descriptive book not leaving out gory details. These details grasp my attention to continue reading more. The rebels are savages and ruthless murdering children and adults running for there life.
DeleteI also feel this is a very descriptive book and was brought into it by the war and was curios what was going on and if this is still a flash back or if this is present time as he continues the book.
DeleteI was attracted to my book Night because I'm very interested in war and this time period. I picked this because I thought it would give me a better aspect of the camps and how life really was, including such real and raw emotions. Primary focus of this is focusing on hope, and the characters are barely holding on to it. The first few pages started off slow and then it jumped right in.
ReplyDeleteI was also interested in the book Night. I thought it would be very interesting to read a book about world war two from a personal account. I also noticed that the Jews had lots of hope and faith that everything would turn out ok, even though many of them were suffering.
DeleteIt is very interesting to go back in time and read about these other cultures and see all of the struggles we didnt have to deal with when we were at their age. I also saw that my book goes slowly aswell and i hope it speeds up
DeleteI also chose the book night because I wanted to hear about someone's personal perspective about world war II and what they did during this time.
DeleteI was interested in my book A Thousand Splendid Sons because I wanted to learn about how woman in other countries have different lives and how things are seen as right differently in other countries. It is a very shocking book and has had me hooked from the very beginning.
Deletethis is all the reasons why I would've much rather wanted night. It sounds like a good read and hopefully have some relation's to my book.
DeleteI was more interested in the book "A Thousand Splendid Suns" for the access to culture in other countries, especially for women, but I also find it important and interesting to learn more about times of war and what it was really like to be alive during those times.
DeleteI am reading Night by Elie Wiesel. The book started off with Elie talking about his religion and being Jewish. Throughout this part I was a little confused because I do not know much about this religion but it quickly got into Elie and his family being forced into the ghettos. Elie talked about how his family would be at one place for a few months and then they would be transferred again to a new ghetto. This book interested me because I have always found world war two interesting and I wanted to read a book that came from a personal experience that someone had.
ReplyDeletei agree, i chose this book because i want info from a real person who experienced this so i can get the in depth details of everything that hapopened
Deletei am reading Night by Elie Wiesel. my first impressions of this book are pretty good. I think it is kind of a slow start but enough to keep you interested. the main character in the book is the author. in the beginning of the novel, he is put into ghettos, he handles this pretty well he is very aware of what is going on around him. i was very interested in this book because i really like books about the holocaust, and books about world war two.
ReplyDeleteIn my book the kite runner the main character Hamir also handles his problems trying to impress his dad very well so far. Im looking forward to readingn more and finding out what he ends up struggling with.
Deletei agree, the beginning is a little slow and diffult to really get into and grab your attention but i feel like it will get better
DeleteIn my book. A Thousand Splendid Sons, it was the opposite it had a fast start and has me hooked. I am constantly wanting to know what will happen to Mariam next, and what she will go through.
DeleteI think the slow start is to set the stage of how fast everything went in the camps and how his life will never be the same after the war
DeleteMy book is the kite runner it is very confusing reading because they talk about gods and people like i know what they are talking about and then never elaborating. The main character Hamirs problem is that he wants to be recognised by his dad but his dad never looks at him like he is a man. His father is very athletic and had a beautiful wife, Hamir reads and writes poetry and isnt any good at sports.
ReplyDeletei dont know whats going on kinda dumb anywwho thats all.
DeleteThe reason why I wanted A Long Way Gone was because I have always been interested in history and novels that are based off of true stories. I find that true stories make me want to read more into the book and they tend to hook me a lot more. What mainly hooked me to the book is because I read a few pages and the amount of information and cliff hangers made me want to read the entire book.
ReplyDeleteI also chose my book, I Am Malala, because I enjoy books that are based on true stories. I like them because I find them more intriguing, and therefore I enjoy reading them more.
DeleteI thought that I Am Malala was a good book for me, because I like learning about other cultures through real life stories. But Malala didn't have a hook because you already know her story but instead she hooks you at the beginning with the past of her childhood and stories about her culture.
DeleteKite Runner being the book I didn't expect to end up with, as it was my third choice is bit wacky. As the start of the book taking place in Pakistan comes along with many different cities and towns. The understanding between the main characters comes confusing at times while the chapters seem to jump. Though reading a bit further I finally found the main characters name which is Amir. I hope the book comes to a steady path and stops switching up every chapter.
ReplyDeletei also have kite runner and it was very confusing at the start of the book with the switch of chapters.
DeleteSeems interesting i am reading Night and it seems like everyone in this class is confused autobiography just seem confusing in general i am sure it will get better though.
DeleteI'm not reading the same book, but I do hope your book becomes clearer as you read on and would like to see your next blog for an update.
DeleteThe reason i picked Night, was because this has a real experience from a person who was actually at the concentrttation camps. when i first heard that he wrote a book about his experience, i wanted this book right away. I wanted a better insight on what exactly happened to Ellie and how he handled the situations
ReplyDeletei also chose the book night because I wanted to hear about his experience during this time and how he felt about it. I wanted to see how he acted while in the camps Aswell.
DeleteI felt the same way when the book night started talking about Ellie right away I wanted to hear more like what does he do to get so people start listening to him.
DeleteMy book is Night. This book was my first choice because I enjoy learning about this time period. I like hearing people's stories about the concentration camps and everything they had to go through. The main character Elie got brought to the ghettos and they keep moving to different ghettos after a couple of months. He understands what's going on, so he is handling it pretty good for the situation he is in. The book started off slow, but then it started speeding up.
ReplyDeleteI chose my book, I Am Malala, also because I like hearing about people's life stories. The only difference is that Night's story seems to be much more brutal.
DeleteI agree the book Night starts slow and then starts speeding up the more you read.
DeleteI was attracted to the ak47 strapped enemies that are raiding the town where they grew up. The primary focus of my book is ishmael and his friends running from the war back at home and going up town to his mother and grandparents. Then they return to there home town mogbeuno when everyone is killed or injuried and parents are running with there dead children. Kids were dead and bodys were left to lay. I am a little confused of how they are trying to help or find there parents, and if these are flashbacks or not. Book is good just names are confusing and I get lost here and there but the book jumps right into the war after they leave there home town.
ReplyDeleteI agree I also get lost and don't exactly know what is happening at points and times this makes this book a little difficult.
DeleteOur books seem complete opposite as mine takes place with a rich kid named Amir who tends to have nothing to worry about besides his fathers relationship.
DeleteThis book sounds awesome if it describes the guys with Ak47s. These books are much more descriptive and real than the last few making them fun to read.
DeleteI agree I get lost a little about the parents to, doesnt really much info
Deletei agree with you on the names being confusing because in my book its kind of the same feeling where there are a lot of people being introduced and it can be too much.
DeleteMy book, A Thousand Splendid Sons, is sad book because the mother has passed away, she was taken from her not so great father to marry a forty year old man at fifteen. And all she wanted to do is be with her father because before she realized what her mother said about him was true she believed in everything her father told her, she was amazed with him. The focus in the novel currently is Mariam, the main character, is just getting to Rasheed's house, her new husband, and he is showing her around the place. She is not really taking the situation too well because she wants to go back to be with her father besides the things he lied to her about. After the first few chapters it went quick, from the start the book had me hooked. Everything that was happening kept it interesting, making me want to continue reading the book.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a very intriguing book, it sounds interesting to learn about how a life would be for a young girl to grow up and marry a forty year old man. It is sad how she was taken away from her family after her mother died and sent to do something she did not want to do.
Deletei am also reading a thousand splendid suns and i agree its a very interesting book especially with how the mother would always try to tell her the truth but she never understood it.
DeleteThe reason I chose I Am Malala is because the cover of the book intrigued me. It wasn't so much the cover art though, it was more so what was written on the cover. It says the title, I Am Malala, then it says 'The girl who stood up for education and was shot by the Taliban.' I was confused how and why they would shoot a little girl, so I thought it would be a fun read. It started really fast paced, as the part about her getting shot was right in the beginning, but since then it's slowed down, just talking about her old home, and what it was like.
ReplyDeletemy book kite runner also slow inn the start it describes the pasts of the two boys with a forbidden friendship.
Deletemy book is also similar with the cover being pretty abnormal with a little kid holding a AK-47 with a rocket launcher. thought it was pretty interesting and that's why it made my top 3.
DeleteI am reading the same book and I also felt confused as to why she got shot when I first heard about it.
DeleteI am also reading this book and its such a good book so far about her explaining her child hood and why shes named Malala and how there families are down there. And yes, it can be confusing at some parts.
DeleteThis book is like my book A Long Way Gone because it also jumps into the action and explains the trauma the author Ishmael went through.
DeleteI think this sounds like a very interesting book because of the fact that she was shot in the head and still survived, then went on to tell her story of her life and win awards for her bravery. I think it would be very interesting to learn about how her daily life was and what she went through.
Deletethis book didn't all that much interest me, I would've liked to get a different book but this book isn't bad. I liked this book over the other ones mainly because this book takes place in a completely different region and makes the story line more interesting. My primary focuses would be just to get the names down and be able to remember the correlation between the difficult names and the narrator. the main character focus so far is just survive what's happening in his environment. first impressions went alright. went a little slow just getting the basics of his life but after the first chapter it jumps right into what the plot would be about.
ReplyDeleteSeems very interesting I'm pretty sure it is placed in Africa and shows the life and how people how to survive, the story line seems authentic and I would like to try and read some time.
Deletei was attracted to my book because its a forbidden friend ship of two boys. its a slow start they're describing the kids past and certain things about the characters.
ReplyDeletei thought it would be a slower book that's the only reason I didn't have that in my top three
Deletethe reason I picked long way gone is because it was war it had a very difficult start and hard to understand at first but once u get reading a couple chapters in it gets easier to comprehend what's going on. I feel this book could be better and more intriguing. as I keep reading it it's kind of a slow start, but I feel it is building up to the good parts as they struggle to find a place to stay.
ReplyDeletesounds like a book I would enjoy reading and the journey of finding a place to stay. would be a part to keep you engaged.
DeleteI agree A Long Way Gone keeps getting more interesting the more you read it
Deletei am reading kite runner it is not my cup of tea i was attracted to this by mrs.broadbent asigning me the book it makes no sense but were still getting started it started very slow and has no context as to what is going on
ReplyDeleteWhat made me pick Night for the book I wanted to read is when Mrs. Broadbent was talking about the book she said it was so triggering that she could only read like 3 pages at a time and Ii like books like that because it keeps you entertained. The focus in this book is the man is going through the holocausts and no one will listen to him and he is trying to tell people important things. I think it is slow right now but I think the farther you get into this book the faster it will get.
ReplyDeleteThe book I have is I Am Malala, and I wanted to read this book, even though it was my 2nd choice, because I felt like this book would be interesting since I would learn about Malala's life and everything that she has dealt with from being a woman living in Pakistan and going to school. So far the book is going great because she is just explaining her life and everything about her cultural. It's going slow right now but that's because she is setting up the story and laying a foundation that will lead up to the day she was shot. Even though it is slow, I think that this will be a great book that I can learn a lot from about another culture.
ReplyDeleteI am also reading I am Malala; I agree I think this book will have a lot of twists and turns to it and will keep us on our toes and have us wanting to read more.
DeleteI'm reading thousand splendid Suns the book is about a girl who is getting married and the person she married is Rasheed it basically all about marriage in Kabul from what I have read so far. the book jumps right into it is basically no explanation it was a little confusing for the first couple of pages.
ReplyDeleteI hear this book is very confusing, but as it goes on I bet this one in particular would be very interesting because of what it is generally about.
DeleteI also hear from many perspectives that this book can be confusing but to others it can be very interesting and fun to read about. Is this book a very twisting story?
DeleteI am also reading Thousand Splendid Suns, and I can agree this book is very confusing so far. The book does jump into everything very quickly.
DeleteI am also reading Thousand Splendid Suns, and I am also a little bit confused. It jumps into things quickly but hopefully it starts to get less confusing.
DeleteI am also reading a thousand splendid suns and I agree how it just immediately jumps in not really any background or any explanation.
DeleteI am reading A long Way Gone and so far, the novel has just talked about how there is a Civil War going on. The main character is this 12 year old boy who is so confused by what's going on. People are trying to run away from all the fighting, but many people get injured and don't make it out alive. This book is hard to get into because it's very confusing at first. Then by the end of the first chapter, you start to understand what's happening. I can't wait to keep reading.
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds like it's going to be a great read and I wonder if the story will get confusing again or if now that you got through the first chapter it will start to click now.
DeleteThis book sounds like it is action packed and will keep your attention throughout the book. It will be interesting to see how a 12 year old boy survives the civil war.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI am reading Night; I chose this book as my second pick because the Holocaust has always interested me because I wanted to know more about it. Being interested in the Holocaust and having the opporturnity to read a book from a survior's experience. The primary focus in my novel right now is right before Elie and his family in Sighet are getting brought to the camps. The characters in the novel right now are not worried about getting to the camps because they do not think it will happen until it does.My intial thoughts are that this book is difficult to follow along with but I feel like it will be good in the end.
ReplyDeleteWhat attracted me to the noovel, I Am Malala, is that she's a female survivor and was such an important part of her community that she was viewed as a threat by the Taliban. The primary focus is what happened to her and how her life had changed. Compared to the Chris Crutcher book I had read, this book has a slow start, but so far I like it because she adds in details about what had happened and that's been pulling me in.
ReplyDelete*novel
DeleteI am reading the same book! I also agree that is has a slow start but her details are very well-worded.
DeleteMy book also has lots of details and descriptions in it but unlike yours my book started off fast and there is more and more action as you keep reading
DeleteMy book, Night also has a survivor. But the survivor of my novel is a male and he survived the Holocaust and endured an immense amount of trauma. Having survivors speak out about the struggles they encountered in throughout their lives is amazing to me because their stories show how much we should all appreciate our lives.
DeleteThe new book I am reading is A Long Way Gone. The thing that attracted me to the book was the story itself. The boy having to be a rebel in order to survive at 12-13 years old. Killing others at such a young age to survive. The primary focus in my novel is the life of the Ishmael. So far in the novel Ishmael and his friends are just witnessing the first part of the war and what the rebels are doing to the country. The rebels just invaded their home village after they traveled 16 miles to compete in a talent show. After the first few chapters my initial thoughts are that this book is going to get into really deep detail about how the rebels and the residents of the country and how they live their lives so much more differently than ours. Another initial thought is that this book really interests me because I enjoy reading about differences in daily lives from a different country. The book also has a slow start the first few pages but after that it starts to speed up.
ReplyDeletethis also sounded like a good book with tons of action. its crazy to think about what those kids had to expiernce
DeleteI am reading a long way gone; this was like my third or fourth choice. I wasn't interested in it all but it isn't terrible so far. The primary focus of this book is about a 12 year old boy, his brother junior, and friend taloi. they travel two towns over to participate in a talent show but are struck by the tragedy of the rebels attacking and killing their hometown along with their grandmothers town. the rebels are violently killing every town they go through, driving people out. It definitely does not waste any time getting straight to the point.
ReplyDeleteI am reading Thousand Splendid Suns, and this book wasn't my first choice either. I also relate to all the tragedy that strikes, since one of the important characters has already died.
Deletein my book night the main charecter eliezer is a jew and i can relate to your reading because in my book he talks about his home towns and all the people he knows gettting raided by the germans and sent off to concentration camps
DeleteI am reading "I am Malala". It was not my first option, nor my second, but I may as well enjoy it regardless. So far, it has been a moderately slow start. She goes into great detail about her home and her past. I like her writing, but I find myself getting bored because I can't focus. So far, I have found myself relating to her in terms of her family relationships. She's got a homesick mother and a driven father. I hope that this book grows on me because I have heard many good things about it.
ReplyDeleteI am reading the same book!! I agree that the book does get a little boring in the beginning because its a very slow read at the start, i hope that the book will speed up a little bit and become more interesting.
DeleteI am also reading I Am Malala, and I agree that it has been a slow start so far. But I think that she explaining her life and past to set up the story that will lead into the day of her being shot. I also get kind of bored because she does go in and out of stories with her past and stories about her country and culture, which I think will be a significant part but it sometimes drags on.
DeleteNight is a very interesting novel in the sense it's so realistic you could about feel what is going on. World War II did at one point happen in history, and the fact the author experienced the real deal, After reading other fiction WWII books this one feels extremely good to read. As short as it is this book has vivid detail for 117 pages. Its something that I would actually willingly read if I were to pick out a book in an entire library, and I'm thankful I got it.
ReplyDeleteI think your book is going to be a good read, I think that there will be a lot of detail in the book considering what the book is about.
DeleteThe book A Long Way Gone also deals with war and is very realistic. It is a very interesting read as well.
DeleteAlthough this book does have a short number of pages, I think that the detail and the pictures that Elie talks about will make this a challenging read.
DeleteI am reading I am Malala, I think what interested me in having this book as one of my top picks is the part where it talks about how she got shot in the side of the head by the Taliban and still survived through the traumatic experience.

ReplyDeleteI am reading the book a long way gone. I chose this book as my first choice because I thought it looked really interesting. My primary focus in the book is the civil war. The young boy is caught in the middle of it and doesnt really know what to do because hes so young with him being the age of 12 he cant really do much. The book starts off fast and gets right to the point, but its starting to pick up more and more and I feel like the book will continue to get better.
ReplyDeletethat was my second choice for a book are you enjoying it so far. is there anything so far that's surprised you.
DeleteI am reading this book and I am suprised by these peoples morals and how unforgiving and ruthless they are.
DeleteThe thing that made me want to read the novel "A Thousand Splendid Suns" was the idea of such a relatable and yet different main character. This novel feels like a glimpse into what my life would have been had I been born into a different country. I believe the primary focus of this novel is the growing up of the main character--Miriam. The book revolves around her and her thoughts and experiences as she grows older. She faces relentless adversity and I'm intrigued to see how she will handle it all in the future. Can she handle it at all? I think that's what the book is really about. I'm just reading to see if she can do this despite all the odds stacked against her. If she can, maybe I can too. That gives hope to many readers. So perhaps the book's purpose is hope, but I'm only fifteen chapters in, so, I really couldn't tell you. However, I have read enough to know that I am invested. I practically hang on the author's every word. I love the easy flow of the book as it addresses difficult scenarios in a real-world setting. I could talk about this book all day, but, honestly, it comes down to this: I cannot wait to read the rest of this book.
ReplyDeleteIsn't always strange how different countries had such different views and lifestyles that make it looks like yours is the total opposite.
DeleteI am also reading this book and while I am not as far yet I would have to agree with several so the things that are pointed out as I am able to see these things as well.
DeleteI'm reading the book night. and so far, it's been pretty slow, but I feel like all books can be like that I'm really enjoying it because it's part of history. my primary focus is to just learn more about history and the life that Elie had to live and just know about his story because so far, he has gone very in depth and descriptive which makes it easy to gain my attention and also because history is one of my favorite subjects to read and learn about.
ReplyDeleteThat's kind of how my book A Long Way Gone is because ishmael is thrown into a war he wasn't involved in.
DeleteI also am reading night and I think it is slow at the start but does pick up quickly. I am excited to read from Elie's perspective as he talk about his experience in the camps.
DeleteI also enjoy learning and reading more about this time period and how many horrible things they had to live through and im excited to learn more about his life.
DeleteI am also interested in how quickly the book will pick up when he arrives at the camp and how he will change from it
DeleteThe book I chose is A Long Way Gone and what attrached me to it is how a kid got involved with all the war going on in his country. The focus in this book is Ishmael, the main charcter, telling his story of when he really go involved with the rebels taking over his home and stuff. This book gets right into the action and it starting to pick up more as the story goes on
ReplyDeleteThat is the same reason i choose a long way gone. I love an exciting book that keeps me on the edge of my seat.
DeleteI picked I Am Malala because the book's cover caught my attention. However, the writing on the cover was more important than the cover's artwork. The phrase "The girl who stood up for education and was shot by the Taliban" is followed by the title "I Am Malala." I felt it would be interesting to read because I couldn't understand how or why they would shoot a young girl. It was quite fast-paced in the beginning when she was wounded, but since then it has slowed down to just talking about her former house and how it was.
ReplyDeleteWhile I am not reading that book I am also curious about why they would shoot someone for wanting to go to school. That is just not something we are familiar with as here we are required to go to school so the thought of being shot for doing so is odd to me.
DeleteThe book that I'm reading is Thousand Splendid Suns. This book wasn't my first choice, but I do enjoy it a lot more now that I'm farther in the book. I like how Mariam who is the main character, has already gone through so much and I'm excited to see how she handles everything throughout. I am very interested in war which is one of the reasons this book attracted me in the first place.
ReplyDeletei can relate to that as my main charecter eliezer also goes through alot being that he is a jew in 1944 during ww2 and i am also very interested in war
DeleteThe book i chose was A Long Way Gone and the reason i was attracted to it was because it is about a boy who gets roped into war and has to try to survive. The main issue that happens is Ishmael's village gets attacked and he is forced into the war. This book jumps straight into the action.
ReplyDeleteThis was one of my first choices as a read. I thought it would be a cool book to read becauuse the young boy naviagates himself through war and to see how he handles the situations being so young.
DeleteSomething that had me wanting to read this book is that my friend had read this book and had said that it was a good book with some surprising events that happened in it. Teh main focus of the book so far seems to be Mariam's shift from living with her mother in a secluded area to living with her father in the town/city with his wife's and other kids. So far, she seems to be somewhat handling it ok even though she has been disillusioned to how he does not truly care for her. To me it seems like it just jumped right into the story. For my first impression of it is that it will be an interesting book and that I might really enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteThe book I'm reading is A Thousand Splendid Suns. As it wasn't one of my first choices, I am enjoying it so far. Mariam the main character, is handling her situations well, as she has gone through a lot. I am interested to see how she handles everything and if she can handle it all. Hopefully as I keep reading it gets a little less confusing and becomes more interesting. It will be interesting to see how much else Mariam has to go through, as I am only on chapter 8 and a lot has happened.
ReplyDeleteI agree Mariam has been handling her situations well and the book has been pretty fast paced and gets more interesting as I read.
DeleteA long way gone is about a young African boy that has to deal with a civil war that's going on in his country. I was drawn to this book cause it was one of the things I had the lest amount of knowledge about and it would be neat to learn more about it. So far the 6 boys are only on the run being separated from parents they are trying to find places that would be safe for them to stay until its all over. They are shaken for the first time they meet the rebels. It started slow then ramped up and showed you what the rebels were like.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely got into the stuff involving the war pretty quickly, but I think it is still a well paced book.
Deletei was very intrigued by the book night. with it revolving all about war and the nature of it, it immediately had me hooked. i feel this book jumped right into the action about the way the jewish people live and how eventually the germans end up taking over hungary and try to capture and find all of the jews elie talked about how they were gonna move into a ghetto and then be transferred to another ghetto in a few months. i think this book has a great start and cant wait to read more about what happens to them
ReplyDeletei also am reading night and am pleased at its pace. i too am excited to see how they react to all the new changes
DeleteYes, I agree the book got straight to the point I am also hooked on it right now because I want to know how the concentration camps and all where from a first person point of view.
DeleteI was attracted to the book A Long Way Gone because of 3 main reasons. First, the book is from a culture I know very little about so it would be a good way to learn about the Sierra Leonese culture. Next, The book deals with a first hand account of war and I was interested to see what war was like for a person fighting and dealing with it. Finally, the book deals with a war seldom talked about. The book gets into the war quickly after describing the living situation of the narrator for a few pages, but it is still well paced. I'm excited to see what the narrator does next in regards to the war.
ReplyDeletei was also very intrigued to find out more about the culture of these people. i also know very little about war, because i have never witnessed it in my lifetime. This book seems like it can expand my knowledge about both of these topics.
DeleteI chose the book Night because of the interesting topic and time period. I am hoping to gain more knowledge on the situation and time period. The Book starts out at a good pace with the Germans Taking over and forcing the jews into camps and ghettos.
ReplyDeleteI was attracted to the book a thousand splendid suns because I thought it would be interesting to see what happens to women in other countries. I feel this book just went immediately in talking about what was happening at that time. the book was a little confusing in the first pages because they would say certain words in another language, so it was sometimes hard to figure out what was happening or being said. the main focus of the book is about Mariam's life how her mother kind of got cast out and everything. I think her mother handles the situation better than most would especially since she knows her daughter thinks she is the bad guy, not letting her talk to her half siblings or go to school but its because she's protecting her. I thought the mother was a bad person to begin but I slowly realized she just doesn't want her to go through the lots of hardship she knows she probably will.
ReplyDeleteI agree I also thought the mother was the bad person but as I read I saw it was truly the father who was wrong to Mariam.
DeleteThe main reason I was attracted to A long way gone was because the book looked action packed. When I read books I usually get very bored and stop reading. However, war books are typically action packed and exciting to read. Also I am uneducated on the topic of children in war in afghanistan. So I wanted to learn more about this topic aswell.
ReplyDeletei also enjoy books that are exciting and have lots of action, i am not the strongest reader, and it makes it easier and more enjoyable when a book is exiting.
DeleteI am reading a thousand splendid suns and even though it was not my first pick I am enjoying it so far. It opens your eyes to the mistreatment women and young women face in the middle east. I like the story but I also like learning about a different culture. The main characters name is Mariam and she is a 15 year old who wants to know her father but her father keeps her seperated and is ashamed of her for some reason. Her father forces her to marry a 40-45 year old man after Mariams mother killed herself. Now she is in a new city with a man she has never met and she is feeling lost.
ReplyDeleteThe book I am reading Night by Elie Wiesel. I do think this will be a good book based of the little bit I've already read. The main character in the book is the author and he talks about his time in the camp. The beginning of the book is slow but does seem to pick up pretty quickly. In the beginning of the novel, he is put into ghettos, he handles this pretty well he is very aware of what is going on around him.
ReplyDeletei am happy to hear you like your book. and that it isn't slow paced anymore, this book sounds like something that would interest me so i will keep an eye out for your next blog.
DeleteI am reading Night and its all about a 12 year old boy who's town was controlled by Hungary. They come in and take their families to camps. The main character is Elie Wiesel and he is also the author so everything is raw and real from his point of view. The information and details of the places is not from some second hand picture but he experienced this and I think that is what draws my attention most. The start isn't too interesting its just explaining his home life but i am hoping that it picks up some more.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you because it brings in a different perspective as a first point of view and what the boy when through and observed.
Deletei was interested in a long way gone because it is about something that i have never learned about before. I have read books about the holocaust, and ive heard of malala, but i am curious how someone so young can be put through something so traumatic, and how ishmael will cope with it.
ReplyDeleteI was interested in knight because of being about the holocaust and followings the perspective of Elie along his experience in the tragedies that were committed in the early parts of the book it talks about how the Jewish community was not concerned by germen occupation and how life was vary normal even being happy while they were thrown in to the ghettos .
ReplyDeletein my book a long way gone the main characters country gets into a civil war and him and his buddies have to try to escape from the rebels or else they will be forced to fight with them, his is separated from all his family and running across his country to places he heard were safe through word of mouth. everyone fears people his age as they are often taken to fight with the rebels so him and his friends need to work around this through their travels. I didn't pick this book it was given to be, but I am enjoying it right now the only thing I wish was that it would pick up a little bit more.
ReplyDeleteI am reading Night by Elie Weisel the primary focus is Elie's obstacles going through the holocaust and the scarifies he made to survive. Elie is shocked and is suffering from trauma slowly as he goes forward seeing scaring events right before his eyes. the book started off slow but it slowly reaching its climax and is getting very interesting as I read more it is slowly making me glued to the book the more, I read. my first impressions where it is going to start slow than get very deep as the book goes on and so far, I am correct.

ReplyDeleteI am reading the book A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. The main focus in the book has been on Mariam and how there country is. It's in a country where men have all the power and women are supposed to have children and care for their husband, who could have multiple wives. Mariam is considered a disgrace Mariam is forced to get married around her 15th birthday and has to move far away from her family she was scared at first but eventually she came around as she got used to the situation. So far I do not like this book. I find it hard to follow with the words that are in a different langue and the strange names they use.
ReplyDeleteI am reading the book Night and what attracted me to this novel was that it is based on the holocaust and the struggles it took to survive those challenging moments. After reading this book I have become intrigued by it because it explains the struggles and the trauma Elie had gone through trying to survive in the concentration camps. In this book I thought it jumped right in because it got straight to the point of separating the Jews. I was confused at first of what was going on but than I connected the dots and had figured the scene out in my head.
