Blog Response #8

Provide your opinion as to why the author chose to write this particular book.  What did he/she want you to learn about his/her culture?  How did he/she do this through his/her writing?  Would you recommend this book to others, and if yes, who would you recommend it to?  If no, what is your reasoning?

Comments

  1. The author wrote this book to inform everyone in the world of what he and other prisoners went through. Elie wanted everyone to know how the Jews and himself were treated and what he went through on a day to day basis. I would absolutely recommend this book and to anyone who is interested in learning more about the Holocaust and survivor's stories.

    1. Malala also talked about how in pakastan they had a culture of the woman being a stay home mom and get the kids and the cleaning all done while the men went to school and got a education and had a job.

    2. it really is a great story because of how well detailed the book is and it makes you feel as if you were there standing in his shoes which is really hard to do because of all the things Hes seen and that had happened to him.

    3. In the book "A Thousand Splendid Suns" the author does a similar job. He wrote it to inform everyone of what was happening in Afghanistan at the time and what women went through, being treated different, marrying young, and having to go somewhere else far away from their houses just to see a doctor.

    4. Within Kite Runner the author shared his story of how it was when he grew up just like how the author of your book had. To let people know what it was like for him in his childhood.

    5. I think he did a great job on describing what went on and made sure that we knew what all went on.

    6. In my book A Thousand Splendid Suns, the author is very similar to yours. He wrote the book to let people know what their culture does and how they get treated in Afghanistan. Women get treated terribly and have to marry at such a young age to an older man.

    7. I read the book a long way gone. My author also talked about what he went through during a war in Sierra Leone. When I read about the holocaust in history i was mad that no one helped sooner and in the book a long way gone, i had the same feeling. No one helped these children and families being killed.

    8. I think that's why Ishmael wanted to wright this book as well. To inform the world about what he had gone through. He wanted to show people that growing up in some places was bad and that it was difficult for some people to survive. But he managed to escape and survived. There's always a way.

  2. I think the author wrote this book to inform people about when he was a child. Before i dug into the book, i did some research about him and he lived in Afghanistan when kites were banned, just like the novel. Also, to describe the environment of Kabul after the Taliban came through and destroyed everything. Kaled wanted his readers to understand want it was like growing up like him from a young age with many hardships. I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested with the growth of people in other countries. He faces struggles with the Taliban, his father, Hassan and many more. Definitely more of a slow start but picks up rapidly.

    4. I think A Long Way Gone is very similar and i think Ishmael wants people to understand his young life as well and all the troubles that still go on in less developed countries.

    5. In my book, I Am Malala, I think she also wrote it to inform what she went through as a child, as most people would consider it unjust and unfair that only a little girl had to deal with big problems, such as being disliked by aa large organization such as the Taliban.

  3. I think Elie wrote the book Night because he wants everyone to know his story. The Holocaust was a terrible thing that the Jews had to face and Elie wants the world to know what he was put through on a daily basis. I think there were some parts that Elie struggled to write, such as when his father died, because it is a sad thing to look back on. I think this would be a great book for people to read because it is very informational about what really happened to them.

    3. I agree, he wants the world to know about what he and others went through. When his father died, he was numb to emotion, and you can definently tell he was struggling to admit it.

    5. In my book, I Am Malala, the horrible thing she had to face was being hunted by the Taliban, similar to your character's being a victim of the Holocaust. Both of them were scarring experiences that younger children, or anyone, should never have to deal with.

    6. Just like your book, the author in my book wanted everyone to know what it was like in Afghanistan. Khaled, the author, grew up just like Amir, the main character, in Afghanistan when they banned the famous sport kite flying. Also, a terrible thing that happened in the book is when the Taliban destroyed every building and tree in sight in Kabul. Unlike yours, Amir was a great writer. He pursued writing after his father died which led him to go back to the U.S.

  4. In the book I am Malala, she wants to emphasize her culture for woman who dont get much of a life and want to have there own job or way they want to live, Malala also talks about how the standards woman had to meet to be a good wife one day and stay at home. She also states on how her father didnt beleive in the culture there and helped her learn because he knew that she was special. And i do recommend this book because it teaches alot of us that we take things for granted just like education.

    3. I am reading A Long Way Gone and I think the reason why Ishmael wrote this book was to inform the world about what was going on in other places. 5. in the book night he shows you his culture by showing what happened to jew. he was a Jewish boy put into a concentration camp and he showed the world what the nazis did to Jewish people during this time. he didn't talk much about being Jewish itself just that he didn't understand how his god could put all these people in a place like that. i would recommend this book but it is kind of hard to read at times, I would recommend to people that like to learn about WW2 and the things that happened inside the camps.

  6. Elie wrote the book Night because he wants everyone to know about his story and everything that had happened to him. The Holocaust was a horrific event that the Jews had to face, and Elie wants everyone to see it for themselves by detailing very well to help put yourself in his shoes. I think there were some parts that Elie struggled to write, such as when his father died, because personally i cant imagine doing something like that about a loved one. I think this would be a great book for people to read because it is very informational about what really happened to them during the holocaust and its also just a really good story.

    2. Your book sounds like it was written for the same reason my book was written. In my book he wanted people to know what goes on in Africa and how having no government power can really change a war.

    3. I agree he wanted to share his personal experience to show everyone one how the haulacost really was and people need to learn about it because it was a part of life that happened in this world.

    4. In my book, "A Thousand Splendid Suns," there was also a focus on awareness of other cultures and the importance of the horrifying events that occurred; the only difference is that my book referred to war. The parent of my novel's main character died as well--in fact, both of them did... I agree with you in that my book was sad but very worth it for the experience. This book is also just a really good and informational story.

    3. I also agree with Lauren--the book is heavily focused on the difference in culture (primarily for women) and it was a great read. I was also immediately intrigued by the book, from the cover page to the acknowledgements, I enjoyed reading it and learned quite a lot. Also, the title was very well crafted and it made me happy.

  9. The author wrote the book "A Thousand Splendid Suns" to show the difference in culture amongst other countries. What is seen as right in one country is seen as wrong in another and I think that the author wanted us to understand that even though we think that children marrying older men is wrong in their culture it is right. The author showed that throughout his writing by incorporating it multiple times throughout the book, the main characters both ended up marrying the same man who was at least 20 to 30 years older than them. I would recommend this book to other young adults because it important to learn about the differences of anothers culture and I think this book does just that.

    ReplyDelete
  10. The Author chose to write this book mainly because it helps you understand how your culture can affect what others think about you and can either be your best asset or your demise. People for some reason judge others based on their family name or their culture. They never give the individual a fighting chance if their past relatives had done something bad. For example, Assef was probably taught that Pashtuns are superior and that Hazara are bad, that they are a waste therefor Hassan was treated badly by Assef and his two friends. This affects the people around you too because Amir was friends with Hassan, so Amir was treated badly by Assef.

Yes, I would recommend The Kite Runner to others that are interested in how the society works in Afghanistan when the Taliban had arrived compared to how Baba and Amir had lived in Kabul before and after, and the time they spent in America. Also, someone that is not squeamish on rape and suicide.

  11. i think the author of the book a long way gone to show the mistreating of the different cultures of whites and africans like when the boy ishmael watched his village get destoryed by white rebels they want to understand the way some people are around different colored skined people

  12. I think the author of this book wanted the reader to know how different the Afghan culture is and wanted us to how lucky we are that we don't have to deal with stuff like the Taliban raiding our homes or killing our friends and family. How the author did this was by going into great detail about how the town looked and what certain things went on such the Hazaras which were normally servants or the poorer people in the town and the author talked about how ruthless they were treated. I would recommend this book to someone because it tells a great story and teaches a little bit about a different culture.

  13. I think the author chose to write the book A Long Way Gone for a sense of comfort. I am sure he didnt like always being asked about his past life in Sierra Leone after being moved to New York City so instead of telling everyone he met he wrote a story of it. I think it brings him some type of comfort and helps him cope because if not thinking about is hurt him it might have been better for him to write about it so he didnt have to fight those memories more or less and thought about it willingly. I also think it makes him a better person because after his rehabilitation being back to his old self was the last thing he wants to do so writing about it could help him avoid it.

    1. I find you perspective on why your author wrote his book the same for mine. I had not thought that Elie Wiesel wrote Night for comfort, but it makes sense. Along with how you said so that he would not have to tell everyone he met, he just wrote his story and his experience down in the form of a novel. I feel as if Elie had to also cope with the loss of his mother and sister and to help that, he wrote about them in his novel.

  14. I think the author wrote this book because he wanted people to hear his story. Ishmael went through a lot as a young kid and when he got to New York telling his story I have a feeling a lot of people started asking him questions. When he wrote this book, I think it relieved all the stress and build up in his body about the war. Ishmael wanted people to see and hear what smaller countries in Africa are going through, even as a young boy you still have to fight and survive on your own if you want to live. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes hearing stories and war books. The book did get slow at times, but you learn a lot about Africa and the stuff the people go through in war where there really is no government power.

When he went to New York to do his speech about his story, even if he didn't tell it, but i think he was asked a lot of questions. He wanted people to understand what is happening in his country. 2. A part of me believes that Malala also wanted people to know how hard it was to live in her country even though she mainly talks about her fight for education. She also talks about how most people lived in fear in her country because of the Taliban. Your book involved more of a war than mine, but there was an army involved in I Am Malala because they had to fight off the Taliban for the longest time.

    3. The book, The Kite Runner, is really similar to yours. The main character went through lots of violence, death, and risks. He explains what he experienced through his famous writings to tell the public. He also had to deal with the tragic death of Hassan. In my book, I Am Malala, she aims to highlight her background for women who don't get much of a life and wish to have their own jobs or ways of living. Malala also discusses the requirements women had to accomplish in order to be excellent wives every day and stay at home. She also mentions how her father supported her education since he saw her uniqueness despite his disbelief in the local culture. And yes, I do suggest reading this book because it makes a lot of us realize how much we take for granted, even things like education.

  17. I read the book "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini and I believe he published this book to raise awareness. Awareness for what? Well, I think he wanted his readers to feel what his characters were going through with the war in Afghanistan, yes. But more than that, he wanted them to witness and understand what family really means. Family is everything in Afghanistan, and this story portrays that beautifully. You feel the pain of a mother who loses children, a father's regret, a woman's grief for someone she loves. The list goes on... Basically, this book packs a punch that is beyond worth it for the knowledge and connections the book offers.
Hosseini is not shy to describe character emotion in detail--from the happiest to the most heart-wrenching. These descriptions are how he really sends his messages.
I would 100% recommend this book to others. I loved this book and I think anyone with a thirst for knowledge would feel the same. Any feminist would love to read this book.

This tell the story of what really went on, we got to read firsthand about what happened. The tension between the Jew and Germans was one like no other there was no stopping the Germans. They just took control over the Jewish communities. I believe Elie published this to make it aware of the harsh grueling things the Germans did to the Jew in this time period. I read the book Night and my opinion on why the author chose to write about the Germans and Jews culture is to explain to people how they were treated when being a Jew and I think that's the culture he wanted us to learn while reading the book night. The way he did it through the writing was he gave harsh examples of what it was alike being a Jew. Yes I would recommend this book to someone who likes to stay on there toes in a book and keep questioning themselves like what's going to happen next or where are they going next in this book you kind of ask yourself that

  20. In my opinion, Elie Wiesel wrote the novel Night because the book shows his story on what he went through in the concentration camps with his father. He wanted the readers to learn the truth about what had happened inside of the camps on a close to daily basis. Elie taught the reaaders about his life in the camps by explaining the torture all the Jews went through. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about World War II and the Holocaust. 27. In I Am Malala, Malala chohse to write this book to show her point of view and to show all the hardships she went through just to receive an education as a female in Pakistan. She wanted people to learn how difficult life was in her culture due to gender, natural disasters, and their political system. She shows just how lucky us Americans are to have the government and the education systems that we have. She expressed this through her writing by providing examples of how other women and some men were treated in their culture and how they reacted to such unfairness. Yes, I would suggest it to one of my coworkers and my mom. My coworker because she asks me lots of questions about politics and the world in general, she asks me about the witch trials and other historical stories, and she likes to learn new things. And I would recommend this book to my mom because she was an english teacher, she likes to read, and she told me that she's always thought about reading this book.

  28. i read A Long Way Gone and the author chose to write this book so people would know how difficult life is during war time in countries like Sierra Loene. People can see it mentioned on the news, but they cant grasp the severity of the conditions these people are living in. Ishmael was frusturated that no one outside the country understood his pain and suffering. I think by writing this book, it would make those who read ore compassionate and understanding for those who came from different situations.

  29. In I Am Malala, Malala wrote this book to inform people about her culture and how women are treated in Pakistan. Malala talked about many things, but she mainly focused on women's education and how women needed education in Pakistan. She wanted her readers to know that women in Pakistan that women have no freedom and are expected to cook and clean and they are supposed to abide by certain rules, like having a male companion and covering up when out in public. Malala let the readers know this by telling stories and retelling events that had a personal touch to it and how she did this came together perfectly and got what she wanted to say across to her readers. I would recommend this book to people who like learning about other cultures and world events/ real-life stories.

  30. i think that Ishmeal wrote the book a long way gone to show the trebles war brings to community's and that it solves nothing all you get out of it is short term gain and he also showed the importance of enjoying yourself no matter what is happening around you he did this by watching movies playing soccer listening to cassettes etc. i would recommend this book to anyone that is ready but not the faint of heart its a really heavy gruesome read so be ready for that

    1. I believe you are correct when you say war doesn't solve anything. Especially in a time like this, all the fighting was for nothing.

    2. I agree on this that this is one of the reasons why he wrote it gives you a good understanding what it is like to be in a war.

  31. The author of my book is also the main character and i think his main purpose of writing a long way gone was to spread awareness. In country's like Sierra Leone, it is hard to spread information to the rest of the world. The technology in these country's is not up to par. Ishmael realized this and decided to educate the world through creating a book made up of his experiences in this time. Ishmael just wanted to spread awareness and show people that someone is going through a worse time.

  32. I read the book A Thousand Splendid Suns and to me it felt like a reason would be to show what women went and possibly still go through in Afghanistan with the Taliban. A way the author showed this was by having the book set in the point of view of two women. I would recommend this book as it is good to read and not to confusing to understand. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy learning about the effect of war of about other cultures.

  33. I read long way gone and I feal as if this book was written to show people how bad it was during the wars and especially where they were living and were able to get away from this war making it hard to survive unless you ran away into a different country. which in this book Ishmeal ran off to the United States after his uncle had passed.

  34. In my book the kite runner it goes over the affects of the taliban and the racism that went on during the time. It also elaborated on how it was migrating into the US during it and all the horrible things the people had to go through to get there. I didnt like the book i ended up with and wouldnt wish anyone would be forced to read this book. The author had no way of tying up any loose ends other than just killing the character off and didnt even bother to write and ending just formed a disfunctional family and called it a day. That is why i hated the book i was given

    1. I read the same book and I agree with you the author never tried to develop the characters but instead would just kill them off when something bad happened.

  35. Ishamel wrote this book in an effort to spread awareness about children in the war. He wanted the readers to understand how draining and hard it was for kids who had to live through a war and to show what they saw. Ishmael wanted to show the reader what happened to him and his family and how he and his friends lived without a home. He made comments about the roles of men and women in his society, and it was really interesting to learn about. I would recommend this book to others because it is a great book and kept me very intrigued, however, I would warn the person that it is very graphic at some points and is sad.

  36. I read the book Kite Runner and for me it felt like the author was really trying to show and explain to the readers the tragic culture of Afghanistan. The author showed this by really focusing on the racism of the Afghan people between the Pashtuns and the Hazaras. The author also showed us about how Afghan went from a peaceful country, to a waste land where you can't go out at night without being shot. I would recommend this book to people that would want to learn about the Afghan culture but if you don't really care this book probably isn't for you.

  37. I think Ishmael wrote A Long Way Gone in order to raise awareness to the fact that some warring factions will do anything to win including killing anyone and everyone, using drugs to keep their soldiers ready to fight, and recruiting children into their army. I think he also wrote this book to explain what it was like in Sierra Leon at the time instead of explaining it to every person that asked in person.

  38. My book was A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini I think he choose to write this book to show how life was in Afghanistan and how bad it was. Especially for the women when the Taliban arrived. I don't know if people actually knew the extent to the strict rules the Taliban implemented and enforced. I think if I were to recommend this book to someone it would be someone who is active in working on women's rights to help them gain perspective.

  39. I really like the book Night because of how it explains in depth of what all happened. I love this because i always wanted to understand what happened in the camps and wanted to know what it was like in the camps. I think he wrote the book to inform people of what it was like in the camps and to tell people the terror of what happenened

  40. I think the author wrote this book to get tell his story about the war that happened in his country. He was able to tell it through his own journey of running from rebels and fighting against them. He was one of the lucky few that was able to get away and bring awareness to childeren being forced into war. I would recomend this to people who like to learn different cultures and people who find war interesting

  41. I read the book night and i believe that the author wrote the novel night to show awareness and let people know what happened to the jews. Elie wanted people to know what him and his peers went through. He wanted people to know what life in the concentration camps was like.

  42. I read the book night and I believe Elie wanted to teach and tell people just about his experience i truly believe he never wants this to happen again, and he knew the Germans were trying to hide this from the public. Elie gave very descriptive words and settings I absolutely loved Elie's imagery. I would recommend this book to anyone that loves thrilling books and very challenging books in a stomach way if that makes sense.

  43. Ishmael wrote this book to inform the world of what he and other people were going through at this time. This was a civil war, so it wasn't really known to the rest of the world that this was going on. Some of the things that the Rebels were doing to these innocent people was horrendous. They were shot in the head, tortured, and kidnapped. There were many other things that also happened. The main boy in this story was just 13 years old when he had to join to war in order to survive. It was very different place in Sierra Leone where they lived so war was a lot different from what we would have done. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. I didn't think I would like it because of the war but it wasn't just about that. So many other things happened.

  44. I believe the author in Kite-Runner decided to write this book because they had a strong connection with Kite running in Afghanistan. When the Taliban banned Kite running in the book the author seems to connected with it. With the author even bringing it back in the ending of the book as Amir and Sohrab go kite running. The Kite running summarizes the characters connections and problems that occurred throughout the book

  46. I think Elie Wiesel choose to write this book so he can tell others the life that occurred during the concentration camps and the cruelty the Jewish had to go through day by day. He had showed us the way the Germans had treated them by the tasks they had to do, not providing them with enough food to have strength, and even killing them off once they seemed weak and were over the age of 50. Yes I would recommend this book to people who want to experience a different life perspective and want to know the life Jewish when through and how they were treated compared to the Germans.

  47. I think Ishamael wrote this book to let people know his life story and what he has been through. He wants people to know the journey he took and also how others got through the civil war as well. While Civil War that was going on in Sierra Leone wasnt really known. He wanted you to know that the culture that he was living in was not right, what the rebels were doing and killing inoccent people. I think Ishamael did a good job telling his story, because I learned alot about Sierra Leone and the war that I never knew. I would recemmond this book to people who are interested in war.

  48. Elie Wiesel, the author of night obviously wrote the book Night to share his experience of the Jewish perspective in the midst of World War II. By sharing this, Elie could influence people and give knowledge to those researching about war, or those who want a damn good story could get it. I could also recommend this book to those who aren't very much into reading and just want to try out a book, or have to read one in high school because it really keeps a reader on their toes.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes this topic. I also think that Elie does a good job of expressing events in this book that we haven't read about.
