The endings of Chinese Handcuffs, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, Running Loose, and Stotan! leave the reader with some unanswered questions. Chris Crutcher assumes the reader knows the ending, but he doesn't come out and say it. You take control and write the overview of one more chapter to these books. If there was one last chapter, what would it be about. How would you tie up loose ends, if you were the author?
I read Chinese Handcuffs and if there was one more chapter I would want it to focus on Jen and how she feels about Dillon. In the epilogue, Dillon talked to coach and asked what being alone is like, I'm not sure if this is supposed to make me inference that he's never going to be with Jen, but if that's the case then I'd be very upset. I would settle for at least knwing if Jen ever gets over her problems with boys to know whether it's because of what Dillon had done or if it's just because she's not ready yet. I feel like that is the only loose end that needs to be tied up, but I could always be wrong, but I need more closure when it comes to the ending for these two.
ReplyDeleteI read Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes, which also leaves the standings of a relationship unclear. I need to know--are Sarah and Eric still friends with Dale??? I was really starting to like him, too...

DeleteI read Stotan and I had a similar issue in my book. Walker liked Devnee, but he wanted to break up with her because he did not feel the same about her anymore. If I were to write the last chapter in my book it would definitely be about those two.
DeleteI also read Chinese Handcuffs and I am disappointed that Chris Crutcher did not clarify if Dillon and Jennifer were a couple or not. I would have liked to see if they end up becoming an official couple or not beings they have had huge impacts on each other's life.
DeleteI also read that book and I totally agree with this. I feel like Jennifer and Dillon should have had another chapter because their relationship through the book was amazing. I didn't want it to just end like that. So yes, adding another chapter about Jennifer and Dillon would have been great.

ReplyDeleteI also read Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes, and I agree that Eric could've avoided being stabbed by calling the police or involving an adult. Somehow, though, I believe that it was better this way. He may have been stabbed, but Sarah ended up safe and alive, and I fear she may not have if Eric had went to an adult. I also disagree with the idea of Sarah's mom returning, as she would have been less than helpful and caused Sarah more trauma through the court process. Other than that, I agree that Sarah's dad was meant to imprisoned and that I wish he would not have been hurt.
DeleteI read Stotan and one of the characters in the novel named Nortie was abused by his father his entire life. One point in the book he was beat so badly that Walker, Jeff, and Lion all agreed to get him out of his house and move him into Walker's house. I think if I was able to write two chapters at the end it would be about Nortie's father and why he was the way he was.
DeleteI feel like if he was being threatened that he at least should've told an adult about it, but sometimes that doesn't always work. In Chinese Handcuffs Jennifer went to an adult but they didn't do much about it, but when she went to the police they dealt with the matter almost immediately.
DeleteSome questions I still have for Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes are: whatever happened to Dale and how did Jody and Mark's relationship end? My draft of the final chapter would include the final conversation between Jody and Mark and the outcome of it. It would also feature Dale Thornton because he became one of my favorite characters and they just neglected to mention him in the closing chapter or epilogue. Personally, I would like Jody and Mark to make up and be friendly, but not to be friends. I would include the friendship between Sarah Byrnes and Dale Thornton and spice it up with his and Eric's relationship (I say "spice it up" considering the whole bully-to-friend trope). The final chapter would include the summer boat trip they planned in the final chapter, but from a future perspective.

DeleteI read Stotan and how you said you wanted to hear more about dale, in Stotan I also wanted to hear in the end about what happened to jeff not because they didn't mention him but because he was dying and i want to know if he ever gets better or passes away.
DeleteI defiantly would include Dale as well because he helped Eric in desperate times even though they did not get along well. They bonded over Sarah and i want to see how their friendship plays out.

I would skip forward to the future of Louie. maybe like five years into the future. does Louie still think about his time in high school, Becky or even his time in football. i would have him go to college for Becky. have him really think about his action but still standing up for himself. what his life in college would bee like without carter and boomer and his parents.

DeleteIf I were to write the last chapter to Running Loose I would go over Becky's life as a flashback talking about her mother and her father growing up like writing the last chapter in her perspective all the way up to the crash and her last moments alive and how Louie really impacted her and what she all went through. I would go over her cheer leading and her moving to Idaho.

DeleteI also read Running Loose and I think a chapter in Becky's perspective would be very interesting and help the readers understand her a little more.

DeleteIf there was one last chapter to Stotan it would be about how Walker finally figures out whether he is going to break up with his girlfriend Devnee or not. Throught the entire novel he was talking about doing it and at the end of the book he says that he is going to give it to her striaght not giving us any closer on their situation. So, if I were to write the last chapter in Stotan I would write it about him giving it straight to Devnee and finally figuring out if he wants to break up with here or not.
ReplyDeleteYour book is similar to mine which is Chinese Handcuffs. At the end of my book Dillon and Jennifer are not officially a couple. Throughout the book Dillon and Jennifer act like a couple by going on dates and confiding in each other. I would have liked to see Chris Crutcher end the book with clarifying that they are a couple.
DeleteI also agree I think in Stotan at the end it would be nice to have that clarity of if walker and Devnee ever break up. but I also wonder about jeff and if he ever gets better.
DeleteI also think that in another chapter, Walker would break up with Devnee because then he could finally move on from Devnee and his self debate of breaking up with her or not. Which I think would make Walker a better character since that was basically his whole personality the whole book.

DeleteI read Chinese Handcuffs and Chris Crutcher ends the book with saying Jennifer wants to tell the police about her stepdad and then leaves it at that. I would continue on to tell how Jennifer turns in the tapes and T.B. is caught. I would have said that T.B. is going to prison and Jennifer got to say a petty goodbye. I would have also included that Jennifer and Dillon became an actual couple because the whole book they were off and on of being a thing.
ReplyDeleteI read Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes and I believe that this book connects with yours. I think this because you stated how Chris Crutcher just ends it with Jennifer wanting to tell the police is similar to how after Eric found out the truth about Sarah's burns, he wanted to tell the cops. This connects to what you said about your book because Eric did not tell the police until Virgil (Sarah's dad), stabbed him and had been injured.
DeleteIn my book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes he decided to do the exact same thing by not outright saying that Sarahs dad who stabbed eric and burned Sarahs face was put way for life.
DeleteIn my book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, it kind of connects with yours. It's similar to how Sarah had to tell the truth to Eric about her burns from her dad on purpose. He also wanted to call the cops and tell them about Sarah's dad but she wouldn't let him.

DeleteI read Stotan! if there was one more chapter I think it would be focused in the future either 5- 10 years in the future or at jeffs funeral or after jeffs funeral. focusing on a bit of what the guys are up to if they actually did stay in touch where they went if jeff is still alive probably seeing if he is getting better or still getting worse. probably seeing between elaine and walker and if what max said about them possibly working in the future is true. if I was the author I would tie up loose ends by clarifying what happened with Devnee and if they continued to be friends.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I also read stotan and I think they should still implement Jeff more and elaborate on if he would get better or worsen if he wasn't deceased. I really liked Jeffs character personally and wanted to know more!
Deletei 100% agree. They went for a sad ending but never really did anything but say jeff was sick. I think it would have been better for the book to see him die and to see the characters remain stotans after.

DeleteI read Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. I would end the book by talking about life after Sarah is adopted by Lemry. I would also have Mark and Jody make up because Eric and Mark did. I would fast forward into the future and focus on how all of the friend group got through highschool after everything that happend and i would probably include Dale being their friend now. I may even include Sarah getting treatment for her scars.

I agree with your decision to add Mark and Jody making up because I would find it important to the readers on how that whole situation went down. Along with showing the friendships after high school.

I learned from Chinese Handcuffs that even if a parent seems great on the surface they could be a complete monster behind closed doors, so I feel like if there was another chapter for your book that it should focus on how he treats Sarah and if she is happy.
DeleteI would also talk about how Lemery adopted Sarah and how close they got during this process and how they built a bond together. I also like how protective Lemery is over Saraha and she is making sure she stays safe.

I never even though about that and would have liked an elaboration on if she would keep her scars and stand tall or cover them and sweep the whole thing under the rug.

Something that I learned from Chinese Handcuffs that even if a guardian seems great on the surface that they can be a a horrible person behind the scenes, so I feel like if there was another chapter in the book that it should focus on how he treats Sarah and if she is content.

I would include this because I find it strange how comfortable Sarah was able to get with Lemry unlike with others. I would also add what happens to Mr. Byrnes. I would add this because Chris Crutcher did not inform the readers on what charges he had and what his actual sentencing was. I would add this because the author never clarified the set charges and sentencing. I would end up loose ties by adding updates in the future about what is going on in Eric, Sarah, Lemry and Mark's lives. I would do this because the book just ends and leaves the readers hanging on to what happened after Virgil getting arrested.
ReplyDeleteI also would include how Sarah is adjusting in her new home. I was so happy when they adopted Sarah. I also want to see what happens to Mr. Byrnes, more specifically how people react to the truth.
DeleteI have the same feeling with Stotan! because it was left on a cliffhanger that really gave no more information on the characters and kind of was left with no clear ending about what the ending was suppose to be. It also left a lot questions because none of the situations were explained and Walker basically recapped the whole story up to where it ended.

DeleteI read staying fat for Sarah byrnes and if I were able to write another chapter I would definitely add in more information about her mom and maybe her life without Sarah or even now after she found her and they are known to each other. I would also include more about her dad and why he is so crazy if there's some medical reasoning behind him. I would make sure that Sarah and eric's stories are told about life after high school and make sure that they went to college and everyone stayed safe.

I would also add what happens to erics moms boyfriend with the charges he gets in the end. Finally i would talk about how everyone ended up and if they grew out of the mental problems they had during that time.
ReplyDeleteI am reading running loose and if there were another chapter to this book, I could see him going into baseball or even the next stage in life which would either him going to college and possibly running track or try walking on for football at a good college. finally, I would have the chapter ending with some flashbacks of his high school years and becoming a great athlete.

DeleteI read Stotan! and if I could add another chapter I would make it a few years in the future, like at least 2 years after high school, because I think that would wrap up the book. In this chapter I would have Walker talk about the boys and everyone else after high school about how they changed and grew up. First, I would have Walker do something about his relationship with Devnee where he would come clean with her and break up with her and finally move on from her, instead of him lying to her and backing himself up into a corner even more. I would also have Jeff still be alive and able to be himself, but he would still have his blood disease and he would be able to cope with it. I think that making a chapter with these would wrap up the book perfectly because it would give the characters the closer they needed at the end.

DeleteI would agree with you, I read Stotan and progressing two years into the future is a great idea. It would show how the characters life changes and see how they do in the real world. I think they should really focus on Walker and see how his life changes since he would probably be moving away from his family.
DeleteI think it would be a good idea to have a flash forward too. In my mind though Jeff's condition seemed very serious and i dont know if he would still be around. I also think if Walkers relationship ended happy that would make the book better.

Also, I would finish the conversation of Mark and Jody about him trying to apologize to Jody about the abortion. My one question of unanswered questions is, why didn't he finish the book having something to do with Sarah's dad. I would also write about a few years into the future. Having Eric and Sarah meet up with each other and get into a relationship.
ReplyDeleteI also read this book so I would have to agree that I was expecting something more when it came to the sentencing of the dad instead of a brief mention that does not tell us much about it. Having then meat back up in the future is also a good idea as it would be able to tell us how the characters are moving on in their lives.

ReplyDeleteWhile I did not read this book with what I have read about it makes me wonder about it and your want for more makes me wonder similar questions. If two of the characters were in an on and off relationship I would also want to know if they ever actually get together.

In the epilogue we learn that Lemry adopted Sarah so I wonder what Sarah would think about now having a family that will love her for who she is and her scares. This is one of the only things that I am left wondering about when it comes to this book.

DeleteIf there was one last chapter in Chinese Handcuffs, it would be about the living situation with Dillon and Jen, and how Jen feels about Dillon. The ending never really tells if they are leaving to Canada together or if they are separated and will be alone forever. Thats really the only thing left out in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI read Running Loose and a chapter that I wish was in my book would be about a character named Boomer who had a bad background. The book tells a little bit about what happened to him as a kid but I feel the author should have told us more so we really understood why Boomer is the way he is.

I would also include life after high school and how the characters got through everything. I would also add something with mark apologizing to everyone and how he made up with all of his classmates.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to write a chapter about at the end of Running Loose, I would write about the future of Louie, Carter, and Boomer and write about what they did after high school. I would write about how Carter got his football scholarship and how he got out of the small town Trout and is doing great things. I would write about how Boomer stuck on his path of being a logger and how he never got out of trout. Louie stayed in Trout working at the bar until Dakota handed it off to him and while still helping out his father Norm at the gas station, but overall he always kept Becky's spirit around so everyone will remember her.

DeleteI read the book Stotan, the end of the book was unique. Chris Crutcher left us with a lot of questions about Jeff and the life of the swim team after high school. We find out Jeff is dying but Crutcher never tells us what happens to him. If there was one more chapter, I would write about Jeff surviving or dying. I would also touch on the life of the kids after high school or what they plan on doing.

ReplyDeleteI read Stotan! and it ended leaving you want more of the book leaving you with lots of questions. If I had the power to write one more chapter i would focus it solely on Jeff and his disease whether he lives or sadly passes. I would also write about what the guys did after winning the State meet, what they would do after school and how their lives have changed since the last year of highschool.

DeleteIf i was to write the final chapter of Stotan, it would moslty be about walker. I would focus the chapter on the struggles of his relationship with Devnee. Since throughtout the whole story his couldnt figure out whether he was going to end things with her or not i would clear up that issue right away, maybe even have a flash forward and have it work out with Elaine as well. The other thing i would do to finish the story is i would have it end with Jeff dying. It basically says he is going to but never writes it himself. I think if your going to have a sad ending why go half ass. I was not much of a fan of how the book ended anyway. I thought it was cut short.

DeleteThe Final chapter I believe would be about what life will look like for all the characters and where they all go and how the things they did affect what there future is going to be will T.B. ever get put to justice for the things he has done or will he continue to get way with all the things that has happened will Jen and Dillion find that peace or will this all torment them Dillion has found his peace in the writing but snice he is done now what will happen will his family make amends or will they hate each other for life.

Deleteif I were to write the last chapter in running loose I would have jasper apologize to Louie for all the false accusations and have him realize that Louie has been right this whole time. he did acknowledge him at his graduation but it wasn't enough. It would be nice to see coach Ledecky get some repercussions for what plays he called. I would just like to see some justice for Louie and all he's been through his senior year.

ReplyDeleteIf I were to write the last chapter of Running Loose, I would write it a couple years in the future. This way we could see if and when Louie ends up getting over Becky's death. We would also be able to see if he's able to move on, and maybe even start dating again. It would also be cool to see what Louie ends up doing in his future, whether that's more sports through a college, or just a more common career.
I would also go a bit into the future for Chinese Handcuffs. I want to see what becomes of Dillon and Jen and what becomes of their relationship because the book leaves it very vague.

DeleteIf i were to write the last chapter of Running Loose I would write about Louie into the future being more comfortable with Beckys death and Boomer and Carter gaining a tighter relationship with Louie. Madison becomes a closer role model for Louie and helps him succeed for his future life. Lednecky apologies for his mistakes during football and changes his attitude for the upcoming seasons.

DeleteI read the brook Chinese hand cuffs and at the end they said they arrested tb but I am curious if he got himself out or if they stuck it to him for what he did because he is a scumbag and can talk his way out of stuff but he was caught in the act. dillon had a really well thought out idea to get tb away and was way better than him killing him.

And how he overcame the death and adapted to his new life. also I would focus on building the relationship between luoie and boomer. I would also talk about how Madison becomes a closer role model for Louie and helps him succeed for his life. DeleteIf there was one more chapter in the book Stotan! I think it would explain how Devnee would still not break up with walker and him talking to her about breaking up I think he will not break it up with her because he will get scared as soon as he gets to her and wont do it. This is also what I would tie up and explain who stays dating and who does not.

DeleteIf I were to write another chapter I would want it to be similar to the first chapter where he is kind of looking back and it talks about if he went to college or what he did and how he is finally doing with Becky's death. I would also talk about Carter and that he went to play college football and know what Boomer did and the relationships he still has whether he is in town or not.

DeleteIf I were to write another chapter at the end of Chinese Handcuffs I would go into T.B.'s arrest and if he was able to get out of it again. Also i would focus on Dillon's relationship with Jennifer and Stacy because it ended with Jennifer being upset at Dillon and Stacy wasn't really in the book much when stuff with Jennifer's stepdad started escalating
ReplyDeleteI did not read the same book but I have noticed the pattern of "unfinished business" that Crutcher tends to leave in his books (in terms of relationships).
DeleteThis is more interesting than what happened by a long while. Instead we just got more sports which we had too much of in the first place.
DeleteThe only question I had about the book was about Dillions and Jens relationship because Chris never said whether they we together or not. If I were to add another chapter it would be about their relationship and I feel like that would help piece some things together.
Deleteif i was to write the last chapter of running lose i would have it be about louies life in the future. it would be about him dealing with the grief of losing his girlfriend becky, but i would also have carter and louie stay as close friends. i would also like to see lednecky and jasper suffer consequences for their actions.

DeleteI with there was one last chapter about a clip from maybe like 10 years down the road. If louie finds a new girl. Maybe see if he fully gets over becky and how he manages to do that. See what kind of job Louie gets and if is still the same person in 10 years. Maybe him and Boomer become friends or if Carter is still in Louies life. Just to see how Louie is doing down the road and how he turns out
ReplyDeleteI was reading chinses hand cuffs the only question I had was on how they jumped around a lot. they got me confused when Jen was in the hospital after getting a head injury it was when they were jumping around with the dad grandpa and her mom, I only ask on why did they do it like that. I would have done it in order to not confuse the readers.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the jumping around because it pulled you in and left you wanting to read more to fit the pieces together after the right information was put in place, it made you think and you had to decifer Crutcher's "code" if you will.
Deletei think in the last chapter of staying fat for sarah brynes we would get to catch up with sarahs mom and hopefully see her come home, we would see erics and jodies story dig a little deeper. we would also get to see mark start to be kind to people and see dale and his dad start to get along better and i would also like to see if erics step dad is considered a hero or a villain for what he did to sarahs dad.

DeleteI read the book Chinese Handcuffs and if I were to write one more chapter on the book, I would focus on Jennifer and Dillon getting closer to each other. At the end of the book, Dillon said that he wanted to give Jennifer a little bit more time to get out of the trauma she had just gone through. That he lost all feelings he had for her. If I were to add one more chapter, it would be maybe a couple of years in the future. They would stay friends these years but eventually Jennifer would start to catch feelings for him. I feel like this would have been a lot better than just saying they just went separate ways.

DeleteI think if they still stay in touch but give it a little bit of time for Jennifer to heal that they would have a great relationship because they have already seen each other at their worst in that was just in high school so I think that they will be able to do anything together
DeleteIf I was to write another chapter on Running Loose, I would make it fast forward to when he is in college and his perspective. Then i would turn it inti him competing in sports in college to the next level. But as one meet changes it for him as he lines up next to Wahington.

DeleteI read Chinese Handcuffs and if there was one more chapter, I would want it to focus on Jen and Dillons relationship along with what happens with the baby that Jen's mom puts up for adoption. Will that baby have a better life than being with Jens family or will she get pushed from foster home to foster home never really having a concreate home. In the Epilogue, Dillon had a conversation about being alone with coach and asked what being alone is like. This may either inference that Dillon will never be with Jen, but if that is the case then I would be let down a little bit. It would be nice to know whether Jen ever gets over her problems with boys and if she could ever get comfortable being within a relationship to that extent ever. I feel like that is the only wondering question floating around within the ending of the book Chinese Handcuffs.
ReplyDeleteI read Chinese Handcuffs and if there was one more chapter it should have focused on the relationship between Dillon and Jen. I like that Dillon was no longer torn between Jen and Stacy and could focus on Jen, but because of Jen's problems with boys it would probably be difficult for Dillon. In the Epilogue, Dillon had a conversation with the coach about what being alone is like. This may be trying to hint at Dillon never getting with Jen, but that would be a bit of a disappointment. Adding this chapter would wrap up the book nicely for Dillon and Jen.

DeleteIf there was one more chapter to "Staying Fat" it would be about Sarah and Moby and all the characters getting to see Virgil get locked away for a decent amount of time. I think it would include Dale and Eric and how they all were there for Sarah the whole time and how Carver would also unfortunately do time aswell.
ReplyDeletei read the book stotan and i enjoyed it alot i think the things that i wish they would have put in a final chapter would either have to be something resolving jeffs story or having an ending where everyone gets a happy ending where problems that had occurred earlier in the book get resolved for all the characters i think that would make a really good ending to this book but i definitely recommend this book because it gets better overtime

Deletei read the book running loose if i were to add another chapter into the book i would like to read about things from either beckys side of the story or i think boomers prospective would be pretty cool to see too. i think this cause we know about the characters in the present time from the prospective of louie and how he thinks of them but i think some back stories on the characters like boomer and becky would be nice to get to know them and what there like rather than them just being thrown into the book getting like a little introduction to the characters.

ReplyDeletei read staying fat for sarah byrnes. if i were to write the final chapter i would have eric jump back to present day to tell more of sarah's life with lemry and how it's impacted her. it would be interesting to know how they all ended up getting through the rest of high school, so i would probably have kept dale in the picture. i would also have Mark and Jody exterminate the beef and befriend each other again but also distance themselves into new groups to fit both of their personalities.

DeleteI read Stotan!, and if there were another chapter, I would include some closure with Jeff for the characters, and the readers. I think the author could have turned his death into something bigger and more impactful.

DeleteI read Chinese Handcuffs and I think that in the last few paragraphs, Chris did kind of tie everything together and made to book make more sense. The only thing that Chris could've done was to have another chapter to explain what happens between Dillion and Jen.

DeleteAs I was reading Chinese Handcuffs I think the best chapter for him to fill in would be a chapter of Dillon and Jennifer's relationship because he always talks about their relationship but he never gave elaborated enough about it towards the end and I feel like that would be a great ending to this book is to figure out what they are in each others life.
ReplyDeleteIn Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes the ending kind of leaves me confused on the standing of the relationships Sarah has. If i could write the ending of the book I would want to hear what happens in the future. Does Sarah end up happy? Do Sarah and Eric get together and live happily ever after?
