Blog Response #5

In all five novels, the main character or characters face adversity in one way or another.  Describe how you view the character's challenges in your book, and talk about how your character handles the hardships and struggles.  If you were in your main character/characters situation, how would you handle yourself?  What would you do?

  1. Ishmael is a 12 year old boy who is lost in the middle of the war. I feel sad that someone so young has to go through and see these things. So far he has been doing a great job of fending for himself. He steals food because he needs to and he is a good hider. If I were him i dont know what i would do. He is so strong for how young he is.

    2. Ishmael is different than my character Amir. When Amir finds himself in tough spots, he normally has his friend Hasaan stick up for him

    3. I agree. Ishmael knows how to defend himself very well. Especially for being only 12 years old. I wouldn't be able to do half the things he does.

    4. I also agree. For being only 12, Ishmael knows how to react to being under pressure and very good at thinking quickly in tough situations.

  2. The main character in A Long Way Gone is Ishmael. Ishmael is always dealing with something from about the first 10 pages of the book. A war starts in his home country of Sierra Leone and him and his family are on the front line. Although when the war reaches his town he and his family are separated and Ishmael is left with only his brother Junior and his 4 friends. The boys since being driven out of their home village of Mattru jong are constantly struggling to survive. To start the never have a stream of food and often robbed elderly and children. They also were young boys which the rebels tried to recruit so everyone were scared of kids so they often got jumped and captured by unfriendly villages. I dont think anyone would wish to be a character in his situation.

    3. yea it seems though he's worried not only for himself but in the story he's constantly reminding us how much he misses his family. being that young and dealing with all of this, its crazy to think that he survived to write this story.

  4. Baba is what Amir (the main character) calls his father and he is a brute of a man as stories told he once fought a bear. He is also a businessman who runs a few companies. Amir grew up without a mother so he tries his best to follow in his fathers footsteps and be like him but he is not. He loves to read books and poems and read stories to his friend Hasaan. His father tried to get him into soccer but he was not good at it and had no interest to watch either. Amir recently found he is a good writer and when he tried to tell his father he brushed him off. If I were in Amir's shoes I would still keep my interests in mind but also try to be like my father as well.

    1. Your character is similar to mine in a way because they both don't associate with their mother and have a mom.

    2. It seems like his father often rejects whatever interest Amir has and that can be really discouraging to a young kid. Not as bad as a situation as Ishmael in a long way gone but i also wouldnt want to be his kid

      Delete
    3. Amirs father expects Amir to be the best, but Amir can only do so much to even gain a little respect for him. I feel bad because without a mother and a father treating you like that it must be difficult.

    4. Similar to my character Mariam in A Thousand Splendid Suns. Mariam's mother just killed herself and her father doesn't really appreciate her. The only time Mariam's dad wants to love her or care for her is when she's gone, and no one is around. Almost as if he is embarrassed to be seen with her.

  5. In the book A Long Way Gone the main character is Ishmael. Ishmael is a 12-year-old boy going through war, he has a divided family his parents got divorced. He has seen a ton of stuff as a 12-year-old, often seeing people get shot and bleed to death and pools of blood from everyone. Ishmael runs from home to flea his city from war with six other buddies that are also around his age. They often steal food to survive and get stopped by many rebels. The rebels threaten to kill them but as of now they always get released. The courage Ishmael has is crazy for a 12-year-old trying to survive in war by himself. If I was Ishmael I would do the same thing he is doing, trying to run away from war and create a safe place to live.

In the cattle car before arriving to Auschwitz, there was a woman screaming about a fire that wasn't there and I think it was really hard for him and the others in the car to endure. 7. I am reading the book Night and the main character is Elie. Elie is a Jew and is put into many different concentration camps. I feel sad for Elie because the things that he saw and went through himself were terrible. Elie tries to remain faithful to his religion to help him get through this but he ends up drifting away from his god. Elie also tries to eat any food he can get and tries to look healthier then what he really is when he goes through the selection. I don't know how I would act if I were in Elie's shoes. I would do my best to survive but I can't imagine what it would really be like.

    1. I can relate this to my book "A Thousand Splendid Suns" because I also would not know what to do if I was in the same position as Miriam (the main character). She was married off by her father's wives--yes, 'wives,' there are three!--at the age of 15 and by 19 she has 7 miscarriages. I think I would have died of heartbreak by then, but she does not. She keeps going. She is also incredibly strong for how young and disadvantaged she is.

    2. In the book "A Thousand Splendid Suns," the main character, Miriam, is also an embarrassment to her father by being his illegitimate child. However, instead of blaming herself (because it is not her fault) she blames her mother for her father's selfish acts of embarrassment. Another thing that is different in my book is that her parents do not expect a lot from Miriam. In fact, they call her "Herami" (bastard) and expect her to be a lowly woman her entire life.

      Delete
    3. In the book A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam also is an embarrassment to her dad. Mariam could never do anything right for her father. Her parents don't expect her to do anything, but her father doesn't appreciate her.

  10. Amir in the book The Kite Runner is faced with a conflict between him and Hassan. Hassan was raped and Amir stood there watching him, then ran. Hassan has no clue Amir knows about this. The next couple days Amir tries to keep his distance but every time they interact with each other, Amir claims that Hassan is harassing him. It gets bad to where Amir asks his dad to find new servants so they can separate. They finally meet back up on their hill and Amir starts pelting him with pomegranates which makes him leave. Me personally if that was my friend, I would have stopped it from happening instead of pretending that it didn't happen. Ultimately it just makes things a lot worse.

  12. In the book I chose to read, "A Thousand Splendid Suns," the hardships the character faces are those of death and abuse as well as feelings of inferiority. I feel that the world has been a difficult place for the main character, Miriam, and that she has learned to handle it by conforming. For the most part, she does little more than object. Occasionally, Miriam disobeys the orders of those around her, but it always seems to end in regret. Therefore, Miriam has been conditioned to do what others tell her and to be grateful for what she has. If it was me, however, I would not roll over and take it. If I were in her situation, I would have befriended and sought refuge with Fariba (a woman whom Miriam's husband hates) and used her guidance to build a better, more healthy life for myself.

  13. In "A Thousand Splendid Suns", the main characters Laila and Mariam are facing a war within their country. At first, their country was battling the Soviets and trying to shoo them out after some time they were successful. But some of the politicians in their country disagreed with one of the commanders after the war causing another war to begin. Overall I think the characters have got it tough with having to learn how to live with the wars occurring around them. They handle the situation by hiding mostly from all the shooting and bombs going on outside. If I was in their situation I would try to leave the country and find somewhere else to live that is safer than the current place they are living in.

In my chosen book, A Long Way Gone Ishmael faces a lot of hardships or challenges throughout the first 9 chapters i have read about Ishmael mostly on the run and can never stay at one place and feel whole with his family. Ishmael has spilt up from his family and friends and has done his best to keep moving forward by making the best of what he has. When he was walking alone into the forest he found himself a hammock in a tree. Tring to make the best of it. He is very sad about not seeing his friends and family but knowns to keep moving forward and take in what he can with the group he is with now. if i were in his position I would do the same keep moving forward or make the best of what i got. Malala struggles with girls' education; nevertheless, her father does teach her how to read and write in addition to teaching her at home how to cook, clean, and be a good wife. I see Malala's challenges as something that we in the US take for granted since we have the right to an education, but she isn't taught that because of a different faith where she lives.

  26. I am reading I Am Malala and Malala is the main character. She is a girl that lives in Pakistan and goes to school. Malala going to school was a dangerous thing because her country is influenced by religion and their religion says that girls should stay home and not go to school. Just by her and other girls going to school, Malala and her father, who owns the school she attends, has faced many obstacles and threats from people trying to shut down the school so that girls cannot get an education. A person who thinks that girls should not get an education tried to shut down the school, but failed and the school stayed open for everyone. This was not the first thing that Malala or her father would face for having a school where girls attend. If I was Malala I would not be able to do the things and be as strong as she is when she went through everything that she went through.

Amir also had to go through being bullied because he was friends with Hassan. Another reason is Hassan was Amirs servant and partly because of Hassans culture. Another hardship Amir must go through is his relationship with his father Baba. Baba always acted like he wanted nothing to do with Amir because he did not get the gene of being good at or interested in sports from Baba instead, he probably got more genes from his mother insteadd I am guessing because the book does not tell me anything about Amirs mother other than her dieing from Amirs birth.

She especially struggles when it comes to the education aspect because she doesn't see how a woman learning could harm anyone. Instead of obeying like evryone else she acts against the Taliban and continues her education and wearing what she wants. I think she's very brave for that because if it were me, I would obey, not because I want to, but out of fear of what the Taliban would do to me.

  29. In my book, Malala is the main character and she used to live in Pakistan. She attends school and lives in a more "modern" family. In a country where women are belittled and looked down upon, education for them is discouraged. But Malala took after her stubborn father who believes otherwise. The country is also going through a rough patch with the government and its religion. Malala stood her ground throughout her life's obstacles, even though it was nearly fatal. I admire her, but me personally, I probably wouldn't be as strong.

I also would not be as strong as her in the situations that she went through because I am nothing like Malala and I would not be able to handle those situations that she went through.

  30. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael is going through really tough times as he is surviving on his own in the jungles of Africa as he is trying to escape the African rebels. He is faced with being exposed to all the weather and all the animals in the jungle. He wants to find a village where he hears about the armed forces protecting a village. Being alone has caused him to constantly throw his own thoughts away as they always make him sad about what he has seen and what he has experienced. Being alone for so long only left him with his thoughts and for a little bit he wasn't sleeping because he didn't want his thoughts to be in his dreams. If i were in his situation i would definitely be feeling the same way he is. Somebody can only be in isolation for long. I would also try and find the safe village they talk about in the novel.

  31. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael faces has faced many hardships so far in the book. First, he had to see all the injured refugees and dead bodies, before the war reached them. Then rebels raided Mattru Jong while he was there causing everyone to scatter. He has been captured multiple times by the rebels, but managed to escape. Recently, he has been split up from his friends and forced to survive completely on his own, surviving off of random fruit. If I were in his position I would be terrified, and I would have no clue which way to go. Honestly, i would probably have been captured by the rebels or dead by now.

While at Aushwitz, they are not fed well or trwated with any respect. Elie handles these hardsips he is being faced with by being strong and using his father as his strength. He knows that if he stops being strong, he will not make it through the camps. If I was in Elie's situation, I would not be able to stay as strong as he has. I would have given up a lot sooner, espically knowing that my fate was more than likely dying

While I am reading I Am Malala, I agree with you that I would not be able to handle the situations that Malala has gone through because she has set herself in very dangerous situations that have caused her to get shot just for speaking out about women's education, and I would not be able to put myself in those situations knowing that I could die. Which I admire her for doing that and speaking out despite what had happened to her.

Mariam still struggles with all of these challenges because she doesn't have anyone she to talk about her feelings. Mariam has to face these challenges almost every day. Mariams relationship with her husband Rasheed is not healthy and its super abusive especially if she doesn't follow orders. If I were in Mariams shoes I would just run away and find someone she trusts so she doesn't have to go through all of this trauma.

  37. In the book A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam faces a lot of difficult challenges. Her mom died from hanging herself, and her father doesn't appreciate her. Mariam is now married to Rasheed who also treats her terribly. If Mariam does one thing wrong, Rasheed is at her say that she is a terrible human and can't do anything. Mariam is never happy because of all the trauma she has been through. She also has no one to speak her feelings too, or someone that will listen to her for once. No one would really want to go through that or should have to go through that.

  38. In my book Thousand Splendid Suns the main character is Mariam who was married off to a much older man by her father's wives. The challenges that she faces includes several miscarriages and her husband Rasheed being upset about that and as a result harming her. To me that can be frightening as she does not have a true way that she could get away from him so she is trapped with him. She handles this by doing what she can to not anger him when necessary and just overall staying alive. If it was me I don't think I would be able to last as long as she has.

  39. Ishmeal faces a lot of war after math, and it would be very difficult to understand for being 12. Seeing war firsthand and what it could do to families and people that you know. It is very hard on one person to move from place to place unsure if it will be even safe or there last stop. Ishmeal had people that he was with that understood what was on his mind but he was always scared that he be one of the rebels forced to fight agents his will and every time he dreamed about it he only saw him in then dead. But along with the war stuff he has no way of having money so food and a place to stay are hard to get. If I was in the situation of Ishmael I would have never made it that far. Ishmael has a lot of fight in him if I was athletic as him I probably be in the same spot but I would try the military see if they could do more for the people of the dying villages.

Elie goes through some unexpected experiences as his time in the ghettos a guy when up to him and his father to tell them when someone asks for their age Elie should respond he is 18 and his dad 40 instead of 50. Elie knows this is a big deal because if he responds his real age they might separate him from his father and wouldn't be able to see or potentially try to protect his father. She faces alot of hardships for her age like, her mother killing herself, her father treating her like crap, her father forcing her to marry a 45 year old man named Rasheed, the struggles she has having a baby, etc. This character goes through so much it is sometimes hard to read. In the book Night Elie faces a lot of hardship some of the hardships consist of getting his head shaved and his number tattoo on him, he gets beat by batons and does not get treated like a human being he is just and object and has to work for food. Elie handles this by just keeping his head up and having faith and not giving up he makes his moves smart and wise, and it is just him and his dad he just tries to stay quiet and not get notice. if I was in his situation, I would do the same thing sense there is nothing you can do about it. 49. I am reading Night, and Elie and his family are taken out of their home along with their whole neighborhood. They lived in the ghettos for a bit but soon were put on a train to be brought to the camps. As they arrived, they described the smell and the looks of the flames coming from the building. They had to sit there knowing that it was people being burned to death. Not only that but Elie had to be forced to tell the leaders he needs to say 18 because he will be sent to work at the camp and that will prevent him from being sorted into the kids and mothers to be killed sooner. It would be hard being all alone and having to work grueling hours just to be burned or toutored to death.

In my book Amir starts to gain a relationship with a girl named Soraya. She is an afgan woman but she has a past with another man who she married which is very frowned upon in their culture. Rasheed the man she married lived far away so she was taken away from her father. Mariam did not consent at first but after hesitation she said yes. At first she was having a hard time as she stayed in bed and cried but eventually Rasheed said she had to get herself together and she did they started to talk more and he gave Mariam a lot of new experiences and Mariam started to enjoy being there.
